The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood

Poisoned Pen Press

Even though I read The Marlow Murder Club just this month, I actually purchased it shortly after it was released in 2021. I picked it up because I was already a fan of its author, Robert Thorogood, the creator of the television series Death in Paradise and a frequent writer for the show. Since I loved that TV series so much, I figured there was a good chance I would also enjoy Thorogood’s book.

Time passed, and I didn’t get around to reading it. However, that didn’t stop me from buying the four subsequent novels in the Marlow Murder Club series as they were published, and then failing to read them too.

So, I recently decided that if I was going to keep forking out money for Robert Thorogood’s books, I should actually start reading them.

The first book, The Marlow Murder Club, introduces readers to 77-year-old Judith Potts, a somewhat reclusive and quirky British woman who, while out swimming one evening in the Thames, witnesses what appears, at least to her, to be the murder of one of her neighbors. Not happy with how the local police are handling the situation, Judith takes it upon herself to solve the mystery of what happened and find out who did it.

While conducting her investigation, she meets two other local women who have connections to the case: Suzie, a middle-aged professional dog walker; and the slightly younger Becks, who is the bored wife of the town’s vicar.

The three women become friendly and then begin working together to solve the murder of Judith’s neighbor – plus the subsequent murders of multiple others in and near their small town of Marlow.

Are all of the murders connected?

Will the three new friends put themselves into potential danger by investigating the crimes?

If they can manage to escape harm–or worse–will they be able to stop the killer, or multiple killers, before they strike again?

Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out.

I’m certainly glad I did!

I’ve read over 30 books this year. I’m happy to report that The Marlow Murder Club is, undoubtedly, one of my top favorites of them.

Much like the stories in the Death in Paradise T.V. series, this book contains a very nice mixture of mystery, humor, and drama – plus some truly unique and fantastic characters. Like the T.V. series, it was incredibly entertaining.

Because my Kindle and bookcases are practically overflowing with other books that are waiting for me, I’ve been telling myself to hold off for a little while before I begin reading the second book in the series, Death Comes to Marlow.

However, given how much I loved The Marlow Murder Club, I doubt I’m going to be able to wait much longer.

I’m very anxious to see what kind of adventures my new friends Judith, Suzie, and Becks get into next!

Thank you for reading. Have a wonderful day!
