I’ve been a lover of John Grisham novels for about as far back as I can remember. I haven’t read them all, but I’ve read the vast majority, so I was delighted to see there was a short‑story prequel, The Law Student, to Grisham’s upcoming thriller The French Illusion.
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by the always‑excellent Michael Beck. The story introduces Stuart Nash, who I assume will be the protagonist in the new novel. Here, Nash is still a teenager with his whole life ahead of him, following the path laid out for him. Until one day, he realizes he doesn’t like the scenery or the destination chosen by others. That moment of clarity arrives alongside a family tragedy that forces him to confront the harsher edges of life.
This awakening reshapes not only how Nash sees the world but who he wants to become. He chooses a future for himself and decides to pursue law. Not for the money, but to make a difference, even a small one. Someone who will fight hard for justice and for the people who need it most.
Having worked with lawyers my whole life, I always appreciate stories that show them as more than the tired stereotype of greed and self‑interest. I finished this prequel excited to see where Nash lands and who he chooses to fight for next.
